Alexey Brodovitch, American magazine art director, graphic designer, and photographer. After fighting in the Russian army in World War I, Brodovitch worked as a graphic designer in Paris from 1920 until 1930, when he moved to New York City. Alexey Brodovitch was a celebrated twentieth century Russian born graphic designer, photographer and art director. In the era of many art styles – surrealism, cubism, Dada, Bauhaus – Brodovitch was one of those who brought European styles to America. We must be critical of ourselves and have the courage to start all over again after each failure. When Alexey Brodovitch died in 1971, aged 73, he had been a physical wreck for more than a decade. Alexey Brodovitch was a genius of graphic design; the man who created the prototype of the modern glossy magazine about style; the founder of the fashion and advertising photography; a teacher of such famous photographers like Irving Penn and Richard Avedon. Alexey Brodovitch is most famous for his work for Harper’s Bazaar as art director from 1934 to 1958. Alexey Brodovitch taught Diane Arbus, Eve Arnold, Richard Avedon, Lisette Model, Garry Winogrand, and Tony Ray-Jones…who are all titans who have influenced contemporary photography on a massive scale. Alexey Brodovitch “We learn by making mistakes. Ever since his dismissal in August 1958 from the art directorship of Harper’s Bazaar, a post he had held for 24 years, followed by the death of his wife, Nina, a year later, he had been in steep decline.. His heavy drinking burgeoned into alcoholism and he spent long periods drying out to no avail. The style in which Brodovitch photographed deviated from the sharp, straight photography popular at the time. Only then do we really absorb, really start to know.” Alexey Brodovitch. To Alexey Brodovitch it was clear that he wanted to bring styles learnt from his time in the cosmopolitan city of Paris; surrounded by artists working in everything from Dada in Zurich and Berlin, Suprematism from Moscow, the German Bauhaus school, Italian Futurism, De Stijl from the Netherlands, to more obvious French movements of Cubism, Fauvism, Surrealism and Purism. Even though I was not as successful as Brodovitch was with utilizing white space effectively, I still intentionally left an abundant amount of white space along the spread to mimic his style. In order to capture some of Alexey Brodovitch’s style, I decided to lay it out like a double-page spread. In 1934 Carmel Snow, editor of Harper’s Bazaar magazine, He is best known for his art direction of the one of the leading fashion magazines, Harper’s Bazaar.Besides, he also introduced new approaches to teaching design. According to one colleague, his images "spat in the face of technique and pointed out a new way in which photographers could work." Brodovitch released a book of these photographs in 1945, titled simply Ballet, through a small New York publisher. Het e-mailadres wordt niet gepubliceerd.
